menjadi &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;great engineer&lt;/span&gt;. Seorang engineer yang hanya dengan melihat pipa dan flowmeter, bisa menebak bahwa pressure drop yang terjadi sekitar 5%. Seorang yang bisa setidaknya mengestimasi ukuran vessel tanpa harus melakukan perhitungan apapun. "Rumus ajaib" apakah gerangan yang  ada di kepala engineer hebat itu? &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"Rumus ajaib" itu populer disebut dengan Rule of Thumbs. Rule of Thumbs tersebut dibuat berdasarkan pengalaman-pengalaman di dunia engineering yang dipadukan dengan teori-teori yang ada. Tapi, perlu diperhatikan bahwa aturan-aturan ini hanya untuk estimasi dan dibuat bukan untuk mengganti hitungan-hitungan detail ketika memang perlu dilakukan. Namun, pada tahap-tahap tertentu dalam proses analisis atau desain, aturan-aturan ini bisa menghemat berjam-jam  waktu kita. Atau siapa sih sebenarnya engineer itu? Mungkin di Indonesia istilah ini lebih banyak dikenal dengan "insinyur". Wikipedia mendefinisikan engineer sebagai berikut:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:100%;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;font-family:arial;" &gt;An &lt;/span&gt;&lt;b style="font-family: arial; font-style: italic;"&gt;engineer&lt;/b&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;font-family:arial;" &gt; is a person professionally engaged in a field of engineering. Engineers are concerned with developing economical and safe solutions to practical problems, by applying mathematics and &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;font-family:arial;" class="mw-redirect" &gt;scientific knowledge&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt; while considering technical constraints.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Kalo saya coba terjemahkan, mungkin seperti ini:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Engineer &lt;/span&gt;adalah seorang profesional yang terlibat di dunia &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;engineering&lt;/span&gt;. Para engineer mencoba mengembangkan solusi-solusi ekonomis dan aman untuk menghadapi masalah-masalah praktis, dengan cara menerapkan ilmu matematika dan ilmu pengetahuan sementara mempertimbangkan pula kendala/batasan teknis yang ada.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Seorang engineer harus bisa menjembatani antara kebutuhan yang ada (baik itu sosial maupun komersial) dengan ilmu pengetahuan (sains) yang sudah dikembangkan sehingga bisa menghasilkan solusi-solusi praktis. Ada juga yang bilang bahwa engineer itu adalah profesi yang menghubungkan antara seni (art) dan ilmu pengetahuan (science). Kenapa tiba-tiba berhubungan dengan seni?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Mungkin temen-temen sering mendengar istilah "&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;state-of-the-art technology&lt;/span&gt;". Ini artinya kurang lebih kalo diambil gampangnya sih: teknologi yang sudah mumpuni. Dengan kata lain teknologi ini sudah dikembangkan sedemikian matang sehingga orang mengatakan kondisinya sudah seperti seni. Dengan tingkat keadaan (state) seperti ini, ilmu pengetahuan sudah bercampur dengan pengalaman-pengalaman praktis sehingga membentuk teknologi yang matang.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Kembali ke masalah engineer, jadi seorang engineer yang sudah berpengalaman seakan-akan bisa memiliki "sense" yang kuat terhadap dunia engineering, sehingga kadang-kadang dia tidak perlu menghitung untuk menyelesaikan suatu masalah teknis, hanya perlu menggunakan "feeling". Orang banyak menyebut ini sebagai "sense of engineer", atau dengan kata lain "seni menjadi seorang engineer".&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Tapi jangan harap bisa punya sense yang kuat hanya dengan memiliki pengalaman beberapa tahun. Untuk engineer muda yang masih minim pengalaman, feeling sangat-sangat-sangat bisa menipu dan tidak bisa dijadikan acuan.
